How Rich Are Entertainers?

This might be one of the most informed reports both for young people venturing into entertainment and industry veterans. Less than 0.1% of the richest people in the world are from the entertainment industry - sports, music, talk show, movie and all combined. This in a way contradicts the hyper popularity they get through the media and the big sign up fees promoters offer to get them.

Interestingly, some of the highest paid entertainers do not end up becoming the richest in networth. I guess Michael Jackson was one of such. Those who become wealthy normally start off early, plowing their earnings into worthwhile investments and keeping their eye on it with all carefulness and skill. Out of about 1011 known billionaires in the world, Oprah Winfrey is the only entertainer on the list. Her closest two, Steven Spielberg and Tiger Woods are worth $110m and $90m respectively. A close study of the reasons most entertainers are scarcely wealthy is because of the lack of financial intelligence in recognizing the difference between what is an investment into asset and investment into their showbiz trade. For instance, it was recently mentioned that a top ranking comedian in Nigeria purchased a house in a high profile area worth N100m. Working on the numbers may reveal more liability from the property than income. An asset is what brings money to you while a liability is what takes money from you. At the later years of Michael, his Neverland Ranch was probably his biggest liability as the authorities quickly took hold of it when it seemed obvious his debt profile hindered him from keeping up with its huge bills.

Another reason entertainers fail to build wealth during their hay days is because of the tendency to assume that their top form and rating will continue and attract high cash flow for a long time. Gone are those days when, for instance, that once upon a time the music scene was at a point or another colonized by Don Williams, Jim Reeves, Bob Marley, The Beattles, and a couple others for a long period of say 4 years and some. There are so many stars these days begging to shine and it is very difficult, if not impossible, to be on the top chart for as long as 12months. The seemingly omnipresence status of today's negative headline hungry media beaming searchlights on the social and private lives of these stars can wreck a robust career within just minutes. This can get their image, corporate endorsements, earnings and net worth tumbling like a crashing plane. Tiger Woods is one of the recent examples.

A third reason entertainers are broke in their old age, if attained, is that the average monthly personal expense of some stars many times are equivalent to annual earnings of 5 high profile corporate executives combined. I once heard of a a rap star who is a car freak with over 50 customized cars. Well, some argue that many of these excess properties are not personally purchased. That some are complimentary gifts from their promoters. True to some extent. However, the gifts tend to build up their psyche on how they are expected to live even when the freebies are no more coming. The desire to impress is no doubt a fundamental attribute in entertainment business. For this reason, most would pay any price to impress, even if they have to be in deep debt doing just that- riding big cars, living in big houses, wearing the latest blings, doing designers, flying first class and private jets, appearing in top functions with top paid body guards, to mention just a few.  True it's difficult to gain fans and patronage without impressing. But Some of the wealthiest stars have discovered where the need to impress ends and who should pay for it - the fans and their promoters. Keeping this in mind helps to remain focused and to know that the best ways to impress has, and will always remain, self improvement, strong character, discipline, hard work and consistency. A friend said of a top female artist that her dad advised her to always "go straight home after the show" and not to "hang around", which she claims is her number one secret to her career success and stable marriage. This brings us to the last point to be treated in this article...

The high divorce rate among entertainers account not just for depletion of wealth but some psychological trauma which ultimately affects their bottom line in image, performance and earnings. No matter how normal our modern age laws have made divorce to appear, a failed marriage still affects the subconscious mind that one has failed in life's most fundamental procreational relationship. The reason is that most people that ever get involved in marriage never ever thought of a chance of divorce while taking the vows. Many had boasted their union would be a model of Shakespear's Romeo and Juliet kind of love, only to face uncomfortable divorce suit not too long after saying "I do". Many entertainers marry and had to divorce a few times which splits their wealth each time and many times lead to certain addictions that bring them to zero level and sometimes suicide.

It is good that young people hoping to make a future in entertainment for the sole aim of becoming wealthy get to read this and make further findings before deciding if this is the best route for them to tow. If one is not passionate about what he is doing besides the money, ending up broke is just as normal no matter what comes in in the short term. Many times, you can have a passion for the trade but not as the art, probably as the promoter. This is also very okay. Don King, for instance, has never thrown a punch at anyone I know, but if you can name the biggest boxers in history, you can be sure he got rich from their punches because he promoted them - most of them (boxers) went broke, fighting him with lawsuits and still fighting to eat at old age. In all endeavours, however, the need for financial intelligence cannot be overemphasized.

The Power Of Persistence in What You Love

"There is no giant step that does it. It's a lot of little steps" Anonymous

A story is told of a man who loved soda so much that he went into business of producing and selling soda drinks and called his product Soda 3up. The business failed and a after a while he started another soda business again and this time changed his product name to 4up. The product penetrated the market and sold some but then, the business failed after sometime. But the man still loved soda so much, so he started again and this time called his product 5up. Again, due to market changes, the business failed just as the previous ones. He was motivated to still try again and then started a new firm and still sold soda calling it this time 6up. the business flourished for a while and then failed too. He simply gave up. Few years later, another person came with a firm selling soda and called its name 7up. It became a run away hit product and the rest, they say, is history.

Most successful goals are realized after about several attempts at achieving them. So there is always need for persistent pursuit. The reason why most people give up too soon is because they do not really love what they are doing. If your primary and only motive for getting involved in anything is the money, then you are not likely to make it through the storm. For instance, I have friends who were stock experts before the global financial melt down. They now rather sell or talk about anything else than shares. It seems to me they were only there because of the huge buying, selling and switching commissions that were rolling in at the boom. Some of my banker friends now tell me "banking is not fun again, if you have something better just let me know". During times of change, stars emerge especially because of their passion for the trade and the hope of survival - not necessarily the desire to make it big - though they usually end up making it to the top, after the storm. This is because they decided to try it just one more time in another way. Helen Keller once said that the worst thing to happen to a man is not the loss of his eyesight, but to have eyes and lack vision. Vision is what makes you see beyond what is happening now. You can see the light ahead of the dark tunnel so you persist knowing that the heat won't last too long. I heard of a boxer whose coach told him if he could just endure enough to  take Tyson's punches beyond the fifth round he'd win the fight, and he did.

Most worthwhile generational impacting dreams in history took at least 10years from start to fruition. The reason most people fail is not because they lack vision, but because they lack the staying power - PERSISTENCE. Many people are always on the same goal but only one gets the credit - the person who persists to the end. Thomas Edison did not originate the research on a electric bulb, he even only bought the patent to the original work and continued from where the originator left off. It took him another 10,000 experiments to arrive at the solution, and he did not just persist, but was willing to persist for as long as possible, according to Napoleon Hill's report. As a teenager Abraham Lincoln had a foresight and passion in what he wanted to achieve in spite of his academic deficiency, career confusion and several political attempts in futility. Today, he is celebrated as one of the most accomplished American presidents in history.

To regain momentum for your dreams through persistence take the following steps:

  1. Ask yourself if you truly have passion for what you are presently doing - can you do it even when there is no money to show? Can you do it for free? How do you feel when people say anything negative about what you do or the business in general? How much time do you spend on it daily? Who are your role models/mentors doing the same thing and successful at it?
  2. Decide if you need to continue in your present career or change and apply your energy in something else you are more passionate about.
  3. Write a personal mission statement of what you want to achieve in short, medium and long terms spanning from 90days to 20 years
  4. Plan, plan, re-plan and write down your plans with time lines allocated.
  5. Take immediate action steps in daily routines and keep the vision in view when confronted with setbacks.
  6. Learn your game and constantly improve on whatever it is you are doing. Get better by challenging yourself
  7. When faced with difficult times, retreat, reinforce and attack from a different direction. This could mean changing so many things including your particular job, business or product as most people realize late that they were not really passionate about their duty.
  8. Be careful about making major changes that can impact negatively on your loved ones. Do not suddenly jump off your job into business unless you have what it takes to be an entrepreneur. People who are used to pay cheques think and live differently from business people. They both can be successfull depending on their vission.
  9. .Persistence Of Vision is the key to realizing anything you dream of, so stay motivated to make the next move every single day

SELLING WITHOUT BOTHERING

Whether as a business person or as a career professional your level of success is directly proportional to the number of people you deal with in your sphere of influence. For instance, there are perhaps thousands of good footballers around the world but big firms mostly pay to get the endorsements of the those who play for European premierships because they have about the largest viewership and impact in the world of soccer. Endorsement of a sports star on any product almost always makes the brand widely acceptable because of exposure to fans via simple recognition. This principle (of numbers) applies in the same way to every business, trade or profession. If you have excellent product or service and large enough people do not get to see or use it then your chances of success are below average. Enhancing the numbers through exposure is the aim of any marketing campaign. The greater your exposure the better your chances of converting prospects into paid customers. In today’s highly competitive arena where people are bombarded almost every minute with just about every kind of sales pitches, most potential buyers prefer not to be bothered. This vindicates the old sales cliche that people want to buy but they do not want to be sold. Hence, getting your products to your clients without undue influence is key to successful selling. There are different ways this can be attained and one of the best ways is through the internet. Email is key in today’s marketing campaign. I’ve been involved in commercial marketing and selling for about a decade and know what it means to hit the streets under hot sun and work 10 hours a day, over 50 hours a week facing rejection and achieving little compared to the effort input. Although successful in corporate selling, it was not without hard knocks of applying all known forms closing techniques. When marketing is properly targeted and then automated, it makes you accomplish much result faster than going it the manual way. Moreover, the internet leverages on the global market place with an increasing 1.5billion users. Learning to sell through direct mail doesn’t mean you have to be super salesman. The following simple steps could help you get started.
1.       Know the rules and not encroach into people’s privacy without their permission. This could be done using opt-in forms to collect emails of those who visit your blog.
2.       Get the services of a professional autoresponder. Many web hosts provide some form of autoresponder and there some free ones out there in the market. However, it is best to use a paid autoresponder service such as AWeber or other to help manage spam and ensure the effectiveness of your message delivery.
3.       You need to decide the niche market you want to reach. This is because you cannot effectively serve or meet the demands of all market sectors except you have the finance to do so like Microsoft, Yahoo and Google. Your resources such as time and money are limited hence, needs to be effectively targeted in providing excellent service to your chosen niche. Another reason you need a niche is because of the search engines. We shall talk more about this later.
4.    Next step is to create a blog or website. There are both free and paid blogs and most of them will give you about the same result at least at the start. To get a blog set up in minutes just visit bloger.com. (To learn more about designing and using blogs sign up for our ecommerce trainin or send mail to p-archibong@piracle.net)
5.       Now there is need to publish quality content to your blog regularly. Millions of people surf the net on a daily basis looking for every kind of information imaginable. Most people may never return to your site anymore after their first visit. However, if your content is qualitative some may subscribe to your blog to be updated and then subsequently could become your customer. Do not just try to sell something which is what every salesperson does. Educate your readers on how to make good decisions in getting their needs solved and then proffer solution.
6.     Publish free reports and testimonials of those who have used the product. This showcases credibility and informs your prospects that they are taking the right decision using by your products. Getting testimonials are easy. You may design a simple testimonial form and ask your customer to fill out or ask them to comment on their opinion about your product or service
7.       Freebies and free trials are other ways to boost your marketing. Find a way of putting up part or all, of your best product for free. People ask me why I recommend this since this is what they actually want to use in making money. The reason is simple: you do not have a second chance to make a first impression. Putting up your best stuff for free gives a stranger opportunity to evaluate your offering and a good quality product creates a good first impression that builds confidence and makes the prospect return to buy and even recommend to his friends. You need recommendations and referrals to grow your business.
8.       Offer guarantee. Nothing sells you fast than 100% money-back guarantee. Buyers are afraid of making wrong decisions. This phobia is built over the years with similar experiences of buying the wrong or inferior product or with unfair price. It comes up unconsciously when they are to make any buying decision. The easiest counter to this fear is money-back guarantee included in the offer. The guarantee period may range from three to thirty days depending on your kind of product or service.
9.       Follow-up. Fully 80% of sales are made after the fifth contact with prospects. Follow-up can be the most ineffective part of your marketing and weakness in this area is detrimental to your business success in general. With autoresponder service you can build in an automatic follow-up series of messages that helps you achieve your goals
10.       Get feedback from your readers in order to determine what they actually want. Customer is king and you must listen to what they want and provide it in order to succeed in sales.

A Sweet Birthday Song For A Gem

I wrote this song some years ago (just before resigning from stage) and sang it on my birthday with my friends in attendance. The lyrics are so motivating that I see it as one of the best songs I've ever written. Though nicer when judging others', I maintain a perfectionist attitude in self criticism - don't spare myself. But over again I scored myself well above average on this song. The song has a typical rhythm and blues flavour kind of like a reinvention of the disco era with the buggy down spice in the bridge. Check out the lyrics below and get a copy if you have a gem and care to make 'em a treat on their birthday. The video has been played in channel O, MTV Base, STV, AIT and some. For those of you who've asked for a copy, this is the very first time it's available commercially over 3 years after its production, and it's only online.

Happy Birthday
 1. Only yesterday you cried
From a heart of love and life
You seemed to say with tears in your eyes
All I want is to survive
Time has come and time has gone
But now we see your light has come
No matter what the night may bring
Joy comes in the morning, oh!

Chorus

   Happy birthday to a gem
   Happy birthday to a friend
Happy birthday to a pearl so precious
We have come to make your day
   We have come to celebrate
Your great future makes a happy birthday
(Repeat)

Refrain
Oh! Happy day, happy birthday to you
   Oh! Happy day
Oh! Happy day, happy birthday to you
Oh! What a day. So precious
(Repeat)

2. Through the storm and through the rain
God has helped you to survive
Many lives have crushed with pain
But you're filled with joy inside
Like a shelter from the rain
Hope is here just once again
Filled with dreams of flying high
You could reach up to the sky
(Repeat Chorus and Refrain)

Bridge

    Come on everybody let's celebrate
Move your body buggy down till the break at dawn
We are happy cos you are great
Thankful for tomorrow cos you'll be greater
Repeat Ref.

End

HAVING A BLOG OR WEBSITE IS NOT ENOUGH

Few years ago John, a friend of mine, tried to convince me to chose a manual gear transmission car option as my official car. His argument was that it is those who do not know how to drive that go for automatic transmission cars. I agreed with him that many people who use automatic cars at the time had little or no driving experience. But I also discovered that automatic cars go at least 5 times faster than manual cars and with lesser effort regardless of experience. This is because the clutching and change of gear functions are automated so that the driver can assess three functions by only one action of acceleration. Automation of business processes, such as marketing and sales, is key to lasting success in business. When your business is making sales for you while you are asleep or awake, it increases your capacity. One of the ways to accomplish this is through the internet. A successful business man of our time, Bill Gates, once said if you're not on the internet you're not in business. His book, Business at the speed of thought is a must read for every serious business person in the 21st century. The priority of every entrepreneur should be more of having internet presence than having a physical presence, although the two should compliment each other. The reason is that you are exposed to the possibility of being located by over 4 million daily prospects from the internet against the limited number in your particular graphical location. However, having a blog or website alone is not enough. I recently met a friend who said he has 22 blogs but not making a dime from anyone of them. You need to approach your blog as one of the branches of You Inc. If a branch of a profit-driven organization fails to meet revenue targets enough to pay for the expense in keeping that branch, it is normally shut down. Fortunately, just like others', your blog is exposed to large enough pool to make it worthwhile profitable. Decide today to tap into this trend to accelerate your results.

BUSINESS INNOVATION

Business & InnovationAccording to Paretto’s 80/20 rule, out of several thousands of new products introduced into the market every year, most of which we do not ever get to know about, 80% fail while 20% break even. This means 20% of new products ever generate enough sales revenue to pay off their cost of research, development, production, advertising and commissions with some net profit left over, and 1% (out of this remaining 20%) becomes a star or hit product. One may then ask why anyone would venture into researching and releasing new products into the market anyway. However, looking at it the other way, logically though, this also suggests that you must work hard to release as many products & services as possible to increase your chances of having a star product in the market. The reasons you must introduce new products into the market are obvious

1.                 CUSTOMER DISLOYALTY: Customers are often shopping around for better deals and free deals. Better Deals simply mean higher quality, cheaper prices, faster or instant delivery, efficient after sales services, speed, convenience, portability, etc. Many times a combination of these are available at competitive prices. No company can grow in this 21st century without consistent product and services innovation. Most startup firms that became extremely successful in their early years accomplished that by founding their business on new innovative products & services at competitive prices. For instance, about a decade ago in our country telephone was an exclusive reserve of the rich due to costs. Also, installation time was another problem even when you have paid. Those who held mobile phones (090) were the superrich ones. But not too long after 2001 when telephony was democratized and people discover they can have instant connectivity and at better prices, NITEL became history. Also, up until 1992, email and browsing was previously exclusive reserve of programming engineers. But now, alongside the invention of scanners, fax machines are becoming obsolete in today’s business world. Postal agencies have also been affected to some extent. The fact is that no serious entrepreneur can build a successful business on old technology or outdated way of doing things because customers are always looking out for the best deals around.

2.                 PRODUCT LIFE SPAN: The second reason for business innovation is the expiry of existing product’s lifespan. Many times producers falsely assume their products will keep selling at high rate of return almost forever. Successful business people have discovered this long ago and today most companies already decide for how long a product is going to be in the market before they even resume its production. When a product life cycle reaches maturity or stability in the market, it is important to introduce its replacement before it reaches the stage of its decline. Companies, and even individuals, that do not understand this succession rule find themselves fully equipped for a market that no longer exists. I met someone who brought his laptop for repairs in one of my clients’ computer workshop. He had uninstalled and replaced the original operating system with an older version because he felt he was more comfortable with the old one, but only to discover there were no drivers for the old version in the new system. This customer was simply ignorant to the fact that the new operating system offers more and better features than the older version. He was also yet to realize that the manufacturer has discontinued production support for the older version and decided to move ahead with the new product because he adjudged that the old product has completed its market lifespan and that he would end up losing customers to competitors if he fails to innovate.

3.                 VALUE-ADDED PRODUCTS/SERVICES: Another reason for business innovation is to shore up revenues by adding value. Innovation is one of the best known ways companies gain increased sales from existing customers and at the same create new customers. It is important that a firm retain customers’ interest in its products and this is achieved primarily by reinventing existing products and services (e.g. Omo was repackaged with better washing formula, Cowbell Milk enriched with more vitamins) or introducing new products into the market (e.g. UTC’s cake, etc). Renewed interest in the company and its products due to increased utility value is key to sustaining its growth in a highly competitive market. There are many cases where good but non-performing products were repackaged and as a result, sales were boosted generally. The question to answer in adding value is what benefits are enjoyed by those using this product or service and how can we add to it in order to increase utility with minimum or no extra cost

QUALITY ENHANCEMENT & COST REDUCTION is another reason for innovation. Most of the manufactured equipment for machines we use today would have been priced at least about five times more if they were manually produced. They would have had more errors and defects too. However, innovation has brought about automation and speed in various processes with precision, which has led to lower cost of production and lower selling prices. Today, someone can stay in Nigeria and school in the UK without physically going there. This is done via online programmes and it saves time of going there. Innovation is ultimately aimed at providing better ways of solving existing problems.

Ecommerce Online Training

"The World Is Flat". That was the thinking of the early scientists before explorers such as Vasco Da Gama and Christopher Columbus discovered that it is actually spherical. Up until the early part of this century, people in the third world nations had to travel for "greener pastures" in the developed world to brighten their chances of maximizing their ingenuity in business and other human endeavours. But now the internet has opened up and converted the whole world into a global commercial community, with little or no trade barriers in most cases, making it possible to achieve your full potential from anywhere in the world provided you have access to the internet. The need for goods and services from all over the world has taken a dimension that can never be reversed. There are over 1.5 billion internet users out of the nearly 7 billion world population. It is alright here to say that the business that does not leverage on the power of the internet stands less than 1% chance of going beyond it's first generation in this extremely competitive era. However, it is also amazing to know that most internet users are as confused about making money online as they are about rocket science. Initially I assumed it was only a third world computer illiteracy problem but only to recently realise that this is a global position synonymous with Parreto's 80/20 Rule and Archibong's Minority Rule. Although simplified in many aspects with new cutting-edge technological innovations flooding the market place almost on a daily basis, the subject of ecommerce only becomes simple to those who take the time and pace required to learn and understand it. Once understood, earnings become simple and business turns to fun. We have dedicated our time to helping as many as are willing to make the change instead of waiting to be forced to change by change itself. This is how I love to put it: although Ford's Model T was a hit at the time, most business people will not invest their money into its assembly line today even with a government guarantee or stimulus. Some weeks ago, Wall street published some 10 Brands that is expected to be extinct by 2011. Among these were Block Buster, Readers' Digest and the rest. I could easily understand why they may be gone. Dot com companies like Amazon, Google and co have taken their business through millions of clicks and instant downloads on their websites from around the world before anyone gets to see the hard copy of their magazine or movie. This has led to loss of sales revenues in billions of Dollars for these companies. Come to think about it, had these companies owned Amazon.com before Jeff Bezos ever thought of the idea while in paid employment, what would have been the situation? Your guess is as good as mine. Although you may be doing great in your sales at the moment, you do not have to wait till this moment of attrition (which is certain if you do not move ahead) in your business before moving with the trend. Soon, we will be offering some online ecommerce training, sort of holding you by the hand through the ever changing phase of the world's Maze - the internet. The opt-in page for those interested shall soon be published. But meanwhile, feel free to indicate your interest by sending email to info@piracle.net with the subject ONLINE ECOMMERCE TRAINING. Our online physical (not real time) seminar slated for 9th october is still holding in Port Harcourt as planned. The Magic of Personal Branding

Fully 87% of the world's population will never taste stardom or top performance in whatever field they are involved. This is a result of many factors including low self-esteem and an increasing need to be like, look like, think and act like other people or institutions they admire. Most people do not want to appear "strange" from the norm. We naturally flow with the status quo by going to school in prestigious/well known institutions, seeking employment in big and well known firms, riding popular cars, wearing popular designers, becoming fan of popular football teams and so forth. Even people in business seek to do it like every other person and still expect to stand out. Self-esteem refers to how much a person likes or values himself. Studies reveal that high self-esteem leads to high performance. The term Personal Branding was first used by the mangement guru and author Tom Peters in a 1997 article. Your uniqueness in appearance, approach, passion and all other interests associated with you can be packeged into a sellable asset or brand. Personal Branding is essential in wealth creation. Most people are ignorant of how much of their personal attributes contributes to building gigantic institutions that may never be theirs. Marketers and salespeople are some of the few that
know this. That is why everytime they move the organisation loses much of it's clients. I have little respect for any institution, no matter the size, compared to the respect I have for the people behind the institution. A star
organisation is made by star managers and star staff. A story in the Bible tells of how Abraham went to war with 318 trained servants in his house. History has it that the world's population at the time was about 3,000. This means that Abraham had over 10% of the world's population in his control. He was more powerful and wealthy than nations. Today, people like Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Henry Ford, John D. Rockefellar, Donald Trump, Richard Branson, etc., some of whom are long gone, have branded themselves to become powerful institutions their names imprinted in world's history. Their names open doors even without their presence. This is not necessarily because these people were more talented or privileged as we know, but because they believed and dared to explore their unique capability and identity for the the good of humanity. The question here is: are you building your own brand or hiding behind another's? Having attending the best schools, working in the biggest companies and trying to be like everyone else is not guaranteed to attain for you stardom and wealth at age 65. Personal Branding, visionary pursuit and integrity will build an asset into your name and help you leave a legacy. A wise man said that a good name is rather to be chosen than riches. That is because a good name is wealth, which is higher in value than riches. Presently, I have access to business facilities in some places that only multinational companies are allowed such opportunities. I work hard to sustain my integrity as it can close the door for others coming behind if I mess up and can also keep the door open to the next generation if I keep it. One way of testing how strong is your personal brand
is to Google your name. If you fail to see good stuff about you in the first page then you have much to do. Many business people, in MLM companies for instance, promote duplicated websites and wonder why it does not come up in the search engines. The truth is that search engines do not like websites that look the same. You must have some uniqueness about your web page. You must have something to offer and showcase it to the world in order to be seen. Use the following ideas to boost your brand online:
1. Use your First Name and Last Name as much as possible- especially in email accounts, websites, blogs. I discovered that a person's first name is his best word which catches 100% of his attention when called.
2. Publish articles, subscribe and feature in other websites and blogs
3. Get to do jobs for others that allow your link to be displayed in their websites/blogs.
4. Use and maintain a classic photo displaying the unique way you appear most of the time - clothing style, hair and general make up. Having clear and similar images of you, especially on your website/blog and social networks portray you as real and can be trusted.
5. Be a learner: Read; study; improve/increase your capacity to learn; get more knowledge of the internet and other subjects and practice on a daily basis
6. Sell an idea or product online. You can earn money online if you are exposed to where your product can be seen and bought. If you do not have what to sell, have what to give away free.
7. Be consistent. Don't be afraid to make mistakes and learn from them. Hook up to mentors that can guide and/or even promote you online in their blogs, email, etc. This helps you get there faster than you would have done alone.
